The Gordon L. Palmer Memorial Scholarship
Gordon L. Palmer
A few months ago, our dear friend and avid reenactor Gordon Palmer passed away after battling a long and difficult illness. Gordon was a member of several USV units. What he really wanted to do was to portray the “surly cook”, which he accomplished to perfection. Just before his passing, he expressed the desire to establish a scholarship as a reward for the youth in our hobby. In lieu of flowers or other donations, the Palmer family has established a scholarship fund in Gordon’s name. As a result of these generous donations, a fund set aside for this purpose is now under the custodianship of the USV Treasury.
To facilitate the awarding of the scholarship, the same application and procedures as currently exist for the Keith Prohaska Memorial Scholarship will be used. All applications received will be considered for both scholarships. There is no need to apply twice – one application will serve the purpose. Awards will be made to two separate individuals selected from the pool of applications received. (Sorry, both scholarships will NOT be awarded to the same person.)
To apply, use the application and instructions found on the USV website under the heading “The Keith Prohaska Memorial Scholarship”. Application procedures are identical.
The USV and 50th PVI have awarded the Prohaska scholarship consecutively for the past 12 years. We are extremely happy and proud to now be able to offer a second award on behalf of the Palmer family.
Be sure to apply soon!

Applications are due by Christmas Day for award the following January. To remain impartial in selection, the apps are reviewed by a history teacher at our local high school (who happens to be my neighbor). Since he knows history, and education in general, but no individuals in the USV, he makes the perfect reviewer. The scholarship has been awarded each year since 1996 except one, when no applications were received. We plan to continue it as long as funds are available.
Applications should be mailed before Dec. 25th to:
